He Was Just A Man by Bill Childers
He Was Just A Man
He was a man... just a man...
Yet, He saw the spirit of humankind;
He came from meager gates
To set the course of man straight,
To free the body as well as the mind.
He was a man... just a man...
Yet, his nation spiraled him high;
He denied not the call
Even when facing the wall,
He returned to ease the burdened cry.
He was a man... just a man...
Yet, he was "nailed" to a mythical tree.
He saw people of his race
Met horror face-to-face...
His death, one price to set them free.
He was a man... just a man...
Yet, he heard a cry from beyond "self"!
He heard the call, and led!
For that he was shot dead!
He had asked naught for the love he felt!
He was a man... just a man...
Yet, many have risen to his stature tall!
Boys have grown beyond flesh,
Brought body and mind to mesh...
Pledged and given a mite more than all!
To honor... Martin Luther King...
"Greater love hath no man... "
